FILM ON THE ROAD: SEDONA Pt. 1

MARCH 18 2024

I talked about my forever camera, the Voigtlander Bessa r3, a few posts ago, but in this post we'll talk about the first time I got to use it. And that was on a roadtrip to Sedona... It was actually a trip to Phoenix to visit family there but we spent some time in Sedona and I had the most fun taking pictures there. So for this blog we'll pretend like it was a trip to Sedona.

It was such a fun drive into Sedona that I completely repeated it a few months later! But we'll talk about that trip in Pt. 2.

I also brought my Olympus Mju on the trip. If I learned anything from shooting the x-700 in Saint John it's to ALWAYS bring a backup.

My Grandma and Aunt live in Phoenix so my mom and I were taking a roadtrip from SLC to visit them. We had some time in our schedules and Phoenix is a relatively do-able drive from Salt Lake so we figured why not. We also wanted to explore a little bit so we split up the trip to stay some nights a long the road. The exact trip went SLC to Kanab to Sedona to Phoenix. We stayed a few days in Phoenix and then made the trip back.

Sometimes these trips feel like a lot of driving but if you are trying to spend time taking photos on the road there's no better way to do it. Flying is great and much more practical but I am usually always in favor of driving if there's time and it's reasonable..... I think anything less than 16hrs is reasonable. The main reason I'm in favor of driving is because there are so many random "a long the way" points that you would otherwise completely miss if you flew. And the flexibility of having your own car is so helpful if you are planning on going to various locations for photos.

I didn't take a lot of photos during this trip but I did finish two rolls in the Bessa and took a handful of shots on the point and shoot. The cameras and the film are in the photo captions but I'll tell you what I brought anyway: for the Bessa 1 roll of Portra 400 and Ektar 100 and for the Mju 1 roll of Kodak Pro Image. I had a few backup rolls too but I never dipped into them, the three rolls were plenty for how much I was shooting.

The Ektar that I brought was slightly expired and you can see it in the overly saturated greens and there are some strange color tones in the sky and sandstone, but for the most part it was good enough. It worked out really nicely for a couple shots in Phoenix though!

That's about all the imporant stuff. We took a roadtrip to Phoenix, I shot some slightly expired Ektar and taking photos in Sedona was so fun that I did it again... I guess I'll just share some photos from each stop and then call it good.
